NEWS
The KwaZulu Natal Wargames Championships held at Alexandra High School, College Road, Pietermaritzburg on 4 and 10 July 2005, demonstrated an exciting standard of play, and introduced a number of new players to the world of competitive argames.
The venue at Alexandra High School proved to be more than sufficient for the requirements of the championships, and is likely to become a popular venue for such championships in the future.
The club based at Maristburg Christian School has shown remarkable growth in the number of players as well as the general standard of play. Denzil Groenewald is just such an example of the vast improvement of play as he managed to fight his way into third place into the Premier division after having beaten veteran player, Matthew Strachan, 3 - 1.
It is however Ingo Haferung who deserves to be mentioned in dispatches once again. Ingo, has taken ownership on the Ancients period in the South Africa by having won his fifth title since the beginning of the year. From not having won a single title prior to 2005, Ingo has managed to walk away with the North West Provincial Championships, the Old Edwardian Summer Championships, the Gauteng Provincial Championships, the Western Cape Provincial Championship titles, and now the KwaZulu Natal Championships.
Even the attempts of South African international players of the ilk of Eugene Burger, Lloyd Clark, Attilla Molnar, and Colin Webster, were unable to stop his methodical march forward.
Ingo's win at KwaZulu Natal puts him into the record books as the only South African player to have won all five such championships.
Kurt Wibmer, also maintained his winning streak in the Under 24 section of the Ancients period. The young Wits University student, has also won each and every Under 24 section in which he has played in 2005, being; the North West Championships, the Gauteng Championships, the Western Cape Championships and now the KwaZulu Natal Championships.

HANDICAP RESULTS
The Handicap championships is a system that equates all players sothrough the use of a ranking system. Final scores are adjusted according to the rankings in order to advantage lower ranked players.
The Union has found that such system has been instrumental in the growth of the game.

_______________________________
I would like to start by bringing to the Union’s attention the support I had from Mrs Ruth Davey, parent of Paul and Hannah, and a MCS colleague of mine. Mrs Davey assisted behind the scenes. She ensured that I had a ready supply of coffee, always a big bonus, and assisted with arrangements, setting up of tables, welcoming parents, cleaning up after our messy players, bussing children to the shops and other Girl Friday tasks we often take for granted.
A total of 17 Ancient, 16 Mlabalaba and 7 Draught players participated in this year’s event. Results, with a Photograph, have been sent and were printed in The Mirror, our local Newspaper.
On Saturday evening we had a very successful braai on the premises. We had a wonderful response from the parents of the Figure Gamers. I counted 14 families and 39 adults. I was surprised and pleased at the number of grandparents, aunties and uncles, not just mums and dads. Teachers from the school also attended and a big party was had!
At the braai I shared our club’s ideas for future events and also introduced our fund raising ideas for Athens, with the goals of financially supporting at least one player. I also used the opportunity to thank Kyle Banger for his contribution to MCS Wargaming.
The tournament ran perfectly on time. Both days commenced exactly at 9am. Only an hour’s break was taken for lunch, as players brought or quickly shopped for lunch. Prize giving took place and was very well attended; possibly the best I’ve ever seen as a member of the Union.
I’d also like to mention that Barry Strydom and Kyle Banger both spent time helping at various tables. This was particularly useful as there were many new players and as a result there were often multiple umpiring needs which I would never have been able to deal with on my own. My sincere thanks to both these gentlemen who quietly got on with helping the game grow.
